Formed

Derwentside Athletics club was formed in October 1981 as a spin off from the Derwentside Recreation Scheme that was created after the closure of the Steelworks in Consett. The club was formed by Rippon Hall, and its first Chairman was Jack Errington. The club was originally set up to cater for athletes of all abilities in the Stanley and surrounding area.
We now have members from an area covering Northumberland to Co. Durham.
Early Successes

The clubs early successes came in the North East Harrier League. Followed by success in the North Eastern Counties Championships in 1983 where Shaun Gladdon won the Junior men’s Long Jump and Peter Holmes won the Youths Long Jump, the girls relay team coached by Jacqui Atkinson (now Begg) won the girls 100m relay title. In 1985, Andrew Peacock was chosen to represent the North Eastern Counties in cross-country in the county team championships in Leicester. Robert Johnson won the North Eastern Counties Junior men’s Shot Put title in 1986.

Traditions

During the mid to late eighties Derwentside A C steadily built up a tradition of marathon and road running in the club, and produced some good senior and veteran athletes, some of these athletes were still turning in very respectable times well into the 1990’s.

During the mid 1990’s we started to once again compete in the North Eastern Harrier League encouraged by John Donneky Snr. After a few years we were managing to field a senior men’s team and eventually gained promotion from division three to two and then to division one and stayed there for a few years. In the 2010 season as a result of increased lady membership our senior ladies were able to have a team finish in the North Eastern Harrier League.

Also during the mid to late nineties a new tradition in the club was started one that has given the club members much to talk about over the years, that of doing long distance relay events and challenges. Some of which have been used to raise money for local charities.

They included:

The Coast to Coast Sustran’s route finishing at Roker beach in Sunderland in 1996.

The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge in 1998.

The Coast to Coast Sustran’s route this time finishing at Tynemouth Priory in 2002.

St Cuthbert’s Way in 2004.

The Three Peaks Challenge, that is the three highest peaks in Wales, England and Scotland in 2005.

Hadrian’s Wall in 2008.
St. Oswalds Way in 2011
